“SynGRID and Beyond: Innovations for a Decarbonized and Digitized Energy Future

On Monday, June 2nd, 2025, the MIPRO Conference in Opatija, Croatia hosted a seminar “IRP-ZT – Green Transition of the Power System – R&D Project” focusing on the green transition in the energy sector—an event that brought together experts and stakeholders from across the industry.

The seminar was primarily aimed at professionals from companies and institutions affected by the ongoing deregulation of the power sector and the wider green transition. As the energy system undergoes rapid decarbonization on the generation side and electrification across transportation and industry, challenges are mounting. The accelerated integration of European energy markets is underway, involving congestion management, system balancing, and more efficient resource utilization. At the same time, the rise of distributed energy resources and new market players, potentially including every household, poses significant challenges for all actors, including system operators.

System operators, academic institutions, and industry partners are responding through various research and development projects to prepare for the future.

The audience included representatives from the Croatian Transmission System Operator () and Distribution System Operator (DSO), the national regulatory agency, small and medium-sized enterprises, and students from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER). Tomislav Antić delivered a presentation on the SynGRID project, outlining its objectives, FER’s role, and the research outcomes directly linked to FER’s involvement. He also highlighted results from previous and ongoing projects that laid the groundwork for SynGRID.
