SynGRID Publishes Policy Brief on Low-Voltage Grid Regulation

SynGRID has released its first policy brief, Bridging the Gap: Technology and Regulation for Europe’s Low-Voltage Energy Future, addressing a critical challenge facing Europe’s energy transition: while innovative grid technologies are advancing rapidly, regulatory frameworks are struggling to keep pace.

The brief draws on SynGRID’s technology and regulatory gap analysis to outline the key barriers preventing proven solutions from being deployed at scale. These include insufficient monitoring requirements for low-voltage grids, fragmented interoperability standards, underdeveloped local flexibility markets, and inconsistent rules for energy communities across Member States.

Despite significant progress in EU-funded research, from digital twins and AI-supported energy management systems to demand-side management and microgrid controllers, many of these tools remain stuck at the pilot stage due to regulatory uncertainty and misaligned market incentives.

The brief calls on European policymakers to prioritise LV observability requirements, harmonise data and interoperability standards, modernise market rules for demand-side flexibility, and establish a clear regulatory foundation for local flexibility markets and energy communities.
